Engine choice help (time crunch) 79f150
I have a Shortbox 79 F150 Ranger lariat 4x4 , if that possible lol. its seems like a mix and match truck. It Originally came with a 400m, bought it with a 302 in it.
the 302 has me so confused. It seems to run/sound great. It definitely looses power the hotter it gets, and I have a 6ft length of heater hose running from oil breather to out under the truck, yeah it has hella blowby, and low compression. 75-120 psi on each bank from front to back 75 starting in front cylinders. so I assume cracked block or blown head gasket. Oddly nothing out of normal from the tailpipe I get no smoke of any kind. it also leakes every fluid possible lol.
Another engine from wrecker will cost me $90 so Im thinking of just saying screw it and get another motor. so many variations are going threw my mind. here is some my Ideas
Go all out, swap in a efi 460 , and carb it. Involes getting old dist, manifold coversion plate, 4bbl carb, mounting brackets as additional purchases.
351w Carbed, easy swap but older 351's seem to only push out 125hp
351w EFI , additioal cost of harness and brain box, and few days to wire the *******, but 210-240hp depending on the later model years.
302 Carbed, same as what I got and to little power for my future needs.
The oddball choice 300/six banger. duraible torqy little suckers.
Also considering swaping out the 4 speed NP435 trans. it has the NP205 Tansfercase in it. I have 35" mudders on it and dont plan to go any bigger. truck is mainly for hunting, I want to be able to haul a camper or tow a small trailer down the highway, not to far of distances and pull/haul it up the mountain. so will need some HP and torque, not sure if a better 302 will cut it.
Top of my mind is 351 EFI swap and just pull the whole damn Motor/5speed manual/T-case out for like $250 including harness and computer. lot of work but seems alot cheaper then rebuilding a carbbed 302-351 to get 200+hp/300+ of torque.
Just want a reliable decent power option, cheap as possible.
Input greatly appreciated
