4.9L 300 efi to 302 carb engine swap

Hey guys so I have a lot of questions hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I have a 91 F-150 single cab longbed 2wd with a 4.9L inline 6 300 and it’s fuel injected. I want to swap in a built 302 from an older truck.

Here’s my questions. Where should I even start ? My plan is to source an 302 and then have a shop do an performance rebuild on it, then I would install it myself. Do I try and find a wrecked truck with a 302 so I can just transfer everything from the donor truck onto my truck, or do I just source the engine itself and get everything else separate. Another thing can someone tell me what I would need to change over in order for everything to work correctly going from fuel injected with a computer on the inline 6 to just a carburetor on the new motor.

Transmission wise what are my best options? I was thinking a T5 and wasn’t sure if it would bolt on directly or is there an adapter out there? I’m new to all this so sorry if I’m asking stupid questions just really excited !

can someone link me an website that makes engine mounts for this swap or would I have to have an fabricator make them for me?

Thanks -Dean

Don't waste your time on a 302 look for a 351W, bell housings are the same between the 3 engines. Try and get a 351W of the 94+ as the F4TE blocks are in the roller ready era then build off of that try and get the whole engine with accessory drive

You'll need engine mounts Carb distributor, Ignition box, a way to drop your fuel pressure to 5-8psi with a regulator. throttle cable for the gas pedal may or may not work, rad might need changed as well due to inlets being in wrong spots.

for a trans try looking for a ZF 5 speed found in these era of trucks usually bolted to a 351W could be a F-150? F-250 definitely has to be a small block ZF too. If you plan on banging gears try looking into a performance trans like a tremec TKO 500 or 600 as these will hold more power and take the abuse better but again more money and you'll need to fab a cross member and driveshaft

I'm sure you'll get pestered by the EFI purists here but its your choice bottom line.

A manual donor truck with the same wheelbase as yours would be ideal IMO given the amount of parts needed, I'd make it a mid '90s truck to get a roller motor too. Nothing wrong with using the M5 either but make sure you put some gearing in the rear axle, the stupid high ratios they put in the I6 trucks will make for a real dog with a 302 under the hood.
