A trusted coworker recently offered to sell me a rebuilt 429 from a 68 Ford for $500 Canadian.. To say that that is a wicked deal would be an understatement.
I have a few concerns though, before I get this mill and try to replace my tired 351M.
for starters, I know the bell pattern is the same, but what about trying to find a standard flywheel for one of these? is a 460 flywheel compatible? I see that i might need to find a hollinger book and go the casting numbers route.
I'm also wondering about the mounts. Do i need to change those or the brackets?
The heads are obviously geared for leaded gas, and I wonder what the best solution is to get geared for unleaded..
I'm not looking to closely into the mouth of this gift horse, as I'm defiitly going to buy the engine.. i just wonder what I'm in for to get this into my truck.
Any insight you fellas could offer would be most appreciated!!
Always wanted to see someone do this. We have a 1979 F-800 with a 429 "Lima" engine. These are hotrods! S.Steel intakes. sodium filled exh, big holley, (surprise), a pretty hot cam and nice big exh manifolds. It pulls 29,000 lbs just fine.
a 390 flywheel will fit a 429? FE to 385 series surprises me a bit as far as interchangeability goes.. again, thats where a hollinger book comes in as far as going by casting numbers is concerned i guess.
still, i wonder what the best option is to get around the lead heads situation. i suppose i'll go and get casting numbers off this mill and determine exactly what i'm working with before i go hog wild.
If you can find a blown 429 truck, the heads will take unleaded. I don't know the cc's, so they may have to be cut or ground to the same as your engine.
Now here's a different tangent.. I've long desired to run propane with a fresh engine in this truck. Will i still have to do an unleaded style valve job on the heads of this 429 if i run propane??
