I cant determine there are any problems in the differential. gears look good. spun the gear with out the hubs locked. Then locked the hubs and I cant spin the gear? Now Im wondering if one of the hubs was never locking when I thought they were. All seems fine. I understand your not suppose to drive on the street in four wheel drive so how can I test if its actually working or not? Even if it is working fine this was a good learning experience. One more thing. How can I tell what the gear ratio is on the gears before I button it back up? Is 90W gear oil OK to use?

Try taking the rear drive line off. If the truck drives with the hubs locked and the t-case in 4-hi & 4-lo you're good.

I'll give that a try when I replace the U-Joints. Do you guys prefer a certain brand of u-joints? How about shocks?

You probably have it buttoned back up already, but the ring gear will be stamped with the gear ratio, or more accurately it will be stamped with the ring and pinion tooth count e.g. 45:11, 41:11, etc.

Just do some simple division to get your gear ratio e.g. 45:11=4.09's, 41:11=3.73's.

Before we buttoned it up we wrote down everything we could find. At the end of a very long sequence we found 46:13. After the math I got 3.54's Does that make sense? Now that Ive begun to dig into this a little I'm kind of excited to do some other things. The steering stabilizer shocks and brackets look like they need attention. The regular shocks are probably as old as the truck. I gotta take her down and get her cleaned up underneath. Someday I think Id like to put some headers on it and maybe an intake and carb.

Thanks for all your help. Ill let you know if the 4x4 works when I get to the u-joints.

Today my son and I replaced u-joints and shocks. While we had the rear driveline out and had the new u-joints in and the front driveline back in I locked the hubs, put it in 4hi and woohoo! It moved! Thanks for all your help with this. I'm really getting excited about working on the truck. Rear driveline goes back on tomorrow and new shocks in the front. Then I need to find out why my instrument panel lights won't work, rebuild the steering dampener, new long shank mag lugs, and I'd really like to pull the front clip, remove the exhaust manifolds and replace the gaskets and look for the correct vin on the frame of this truck. Thanks again.
