High ECT

06 6.0l has been running hot. I don't drive the truck much, but i don't remember seeing temps this high. About 3 months ago i got a coolant flush, shop uses motorcraft gold. Anyway since then I've been driving the truck more frequently. These numbers are all w/o a trailer, just normal driving. Mornings temps run 202-205* with outside temp around 45*. Afternoon temps run about 205-212* with outside temp about 70*.

Yesterday i was doing a little elk scouting for archery. About 10-20mph on gravel road, steep grade, i was getting 215-227* with outside temp of about 70* and the fan was kicking on. I don't think I've ever heard the fan kick on even when towing.

Could something been affected during coolant flush? Also i have the capability if data logging. Are there parameters i could check that could help me diagnose this problem? Thermostat opening, etc....? Thanks

GOOD LUCK!

I went through the same thing recently - mine ended up being head gasket & likely cracked head(s)!

I swapped the thermostat first - it made no change. I checked coolant flow - wanted to make sure water pump was moving water.. and it was.

I took it to the dealer and paid a dianostic fee - and for sure head gasket(s) are bad. They are 99.9% sure that the coolant has diesel in it.

Hope you have better luck than I did! Here is a link to my post with more information: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...lant-temp.html

Yea I've read over your thread, that sucks, I'm hoping for a lesser problem. Do you know what diagnostics they ran that lead them to think cracked head gasket?

Yes egr is in place. I also started a thread about a p0299 code I've been getting, possible overboost.

Also check the ECT and EOT after a 12 hour cold soak they need to be the same temp or within a couple degrees

Might only be bad sensor this would trigger the fan as well as give a high reading

Yes it was a thread that got high jacked, lol. You posted in it, the guy solved problem with a new ebp sensor. Thought p0299 could be under or over boost. Didn't know if this code was pertinent to this thread.

Anyway, by 12hr soak do you mean compere ect and eot values at cold start?

And also yes to your question, but it might be more like 18-24 hours as the ambient temps come up (to get a real cold engine). The ECT and EOT should be w/i a deg or two of each other...

ok. A degree or two for how long, till engine reaches operating temp? Or just at start?

Just at start. If they are off by more than a few degrees one of the sensors is bad. With some luck, that is your problem.

Sounds like the shop that flushed your system just ruined your oil cooler... therefore high EOT.. The numbers you posted in the OP, is that your water temp or oil temp? If its your coolant then whats your EOT at the time?

The numbers i have been basing this thread on were from digital gauge, quadzilla commander. This evening i ran the ect with SCT livelink and was getting an ect of 196*f, while my gauge was reading 205*f. Livelink is new to me and im unable to figure out the readings for eot.

This weekend when i heard my fan kick on it wasnt loud like many have describe on this forum, it was barely noticeable. With the readings i got tonight, im really confused and dont know what to believe.
