Hey all
I need some advice for my exhaust. I recently had a quiet flow exhaust installed and my muffler guy (in the business for 30+ years) advised me to down size my tail pipe coming out of the muffler from 3" to 2.5" and said it would actually increase power+torque.
Me not being a muffler efficianato I took his advise and let him downsize, but now I'm starting to second guess this move. One thing I have always been told is more air in and more exhaust out= more power, torque and better fuel economy.
I pulled my 21ft toy hauler up to Big Bear lake this weekend and on several of the steeper grades it was really struggling. That being said I had never towed my trailer up to Big Bear and don't know how it would have done before with the Dyna and 3" tailpipe?
Is this just in my head or should I go back to the 3" ???
Well a 21ft camper doesn't seem like much. But with that said, I pull a 31 ft camper. I have headers, hi flow 4 inch exhaust, and a air intake. On some of the bigger hills, mine will drop down into 2nd gear even at 65-70 mph. It seems to bog down a bit at some rpms/speed when the lock up converter kicks in. But it does alright.
Now as for your exhaust, I would never go smaller than stock sizing. In this case 3 inch. But I really don't think you will notice a power difference by swapping just the tailpipe.

It was dropping into 2nd a lot and rpm's were up around 4-5k a couple times.
It is a pretty good climb though at around 6k ft climb in just 50 miles approximately. And it's a windy road.

Bad move. Nothing you do to the tailpipe can increase power but you probably just decreased it................go back.
