I recently replaced my GTP38R due to oil leaks from the shaft seals. Before installing the new turbo, I swapped the compressor wheel with one of Riffraff Diesel's new billet 11 vane wheels. I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this install. Being me, I wanted that little bit more. I had tossed around the idea of adding a turbo blanket around my 1.15 A/R turbine housing, in addition to the ceramic coating, to "keep the heat" where it belongs to add efficiency to the exhaust flow and away from the cold side. I decided to give it a try, since I had already wrapped the uppipes last spring. I am hoping to see a little better spool up and reduction of underhood temps. I monitor my intake temps at the spider, so I'm curious to see how much difference I'll see at that point.
That's BA. Nice tight fit. What kind of wrap is it?
It is a hand sewn blanket from Xtreme Parts World. They come in different sizes. I emailed them and told them my application. It is sized to fit a large T4 - small T5 turbo.
nice! I don't know if it would fit with my exhaust brake. it bolts up where the EBPV used to be. I also want to wrap the down pipe about 3 ft. keep all the heat in, help with the flow, don't cha know. I don't know where the point of diminishing returns is. Should we keep the exhaust temps up til it reaches the muffler? or is 30 in enough?
Roland that is a really nice turbo wrap, fits nicely !! You know I am a big fan of wrapping exhaust stuff. I have my up pipes and down pipe wrapped. Now I went about 30 inchs down but in hindsight I wish I would have wrapped it past the tranny lines. Since where I stopped was right before the trans lines. I don't like the idea of heat transfer to the tranny lines.
So I am looking forward to hearing your results. Keep up the good work and I am sure you'll get over the 500hp mark at RRE this year!!

Thanks, Ed. It had hooks on the outside to retain it with tension springs, but I didn't use them. You can't hardly get back there and it's holding nicely without them. I'm going to see how it goes with the blanket before going any farther. I'd like to see how much each stage of heat retention plays its part. Every little bit helps. I spent time with the better half today and will test drive it and report tomorrow.

Interested in your results as well, do you expect a mpg's improvment?
Roland,
wish I could help with before and after but when we built the motor, I had the turbo,up-pipes,down pipe, ceramic coated and wraped the up-pipes/down pipe and installed the turbo blanket..

It wasn't really planned as a fuel economy improver, but it looks like I'm seeing a reduction in intake air temperature which will relate to a better charge of oxygen to mix with the fuel. I'm hopeful it will be beneficial. Just the insulating factor is helping with keeping the compressor side a bit cooler and lowering intake temps ~ 4-5 degrees.

SOTP feel tells me the acceleration/spooling has improved somewhat. Nothing drastic, but noticable. The blanket was $69.95 + shipping.

I had some cashback credit on my Discover card and got it for < $12, out of pocket. I used the same stuff to wrap my uppipes last year.
