Rear bumper removal question?

I have a 2011 XLT with the chrome pkg and I want to swap my chrome rear bumper for a painted white one like the STX/XTR/FX4/FX2.

Does the rear bumper come off easily? And is it one or two pieces? I'm confused after looking under it. It appears the chrome part are just two covers. It almost looks like the the oem hitch acts as the "real" bumper and the chrome parts and plastic step pad just snap/ bolt to it.

Also if anyone here has done this mod is it possible to just buy the right & left sides and do the FX/STX parts come pre-painted?

Thanks in advance

-Ryan

The rear bumper assembly is comprised of right and left "bumpers" and a bumper pad.

The non-chrome bumpers are PTM (Paint To Match).

The bumpers are mounted to brackets via bolts and clips.

If I was going to spend the money to swap rear bumpers, I'd be looking at the Ranch Hand or Road Armor rear bumper replacements, along with a color-matched Line-X treatment...

It'll cost more, but it will look sharp and you won't have to worry about the paint getting scratched.

Ford did a nice job hiding the fact that it's a two piece bumper. If you look at the GM's, the plastic step pad is also two piece. Perhaps a little cheaper to repair but I think it's kinda cheesey.

I don't remember what I had in the bed or what spilled but something spilled and leaked out of the bed and ran out and down the left chrome bumper piece. It's now permanently stained or burned into the chrome and is driving me nuts.

What is more crazy is Ford want over $300 over the counter for the part, which just sounds like highway robbery for something that looks like it was intentionally designed to be easily replaceable.

As far as Ranch Hand bumpers go, I personally don't like the aftermarket look. I'm honestly more of an OEM+ guy. Plus the Ranch Hand bumpers are so heavy they often lower the ride height slightly and likely add to a parasitic loss in mpg's

I have found some on Ebay from $199-$290 and some that are paint to match and already painted from the factory. But can't fine a lt & rt set in the most popular F-150 color made Oxford White
