-Looking at upgrading to the newer tailgate.
I have read some older threads about them not fitting flush, and some that say you must adjust the stops in the jambs inward to make the new gate fit flush.......
I understand about the left side hinge swap, that's not a big deal to me.
I have found a guy here locally on C/L for $400.00-I think I can probably get it for $300.00.....it IS NOT the one with the step.
My question is I think the gate may be stolen, don't these have the original vehicle's VIN on a small tag somewhere?
I do not think there is a VIN anywhere on it. I have one on my 2000 and I did not have to make any of the adjustments you described to make it line up properly. I put the new lh hinge in the same place as the old one and everything lined up.
The guy may work for somewhere that removes the gate in place of a contractor cap or something like that. That is how I got mine. It was taken off a truck to install a contractor cap with the full swing out doors
My Great Niece works at our local Ford dealership and I asked her if any had been stolen recently, she checked and a King Ranch gate had been stolen with the camera and step-she says that it cost $6k to replace.....I'm guessing someone marked that up pretty good......the one on C/L that I am looking at IS NOT King Ranch.........
Good to know about the fit.
I'm thinking about getting it and using the vinyl letters, in my case in Tan in the embossed letters......anyone else do this?
In Colo., I see 2012-ish gates for more like $1200 without the camera/step. There seem to be no 'cheap takeoff tailgates' and even a clean '99 gate is typically listed for $300-400. I'm not saying that people are really selling tailgates for these prices, but that's how they are listed.
Why would you want to get a new tailgate that doesn't really line up perfect and looks like what it is...a new tailgate on an old Ford...and it doesn't have a step? I'd get over that stuff if it had a step, but not for one without. You already have a tailgate without a step.

I resent that remark about a new tailgate on an old Ford.
MY LATE '99 has been accused by many strangers of being an '07 and 1 guy guessed a '10-he didn't know Fords well, just was impressed as to how clean and shiney nice my old truck is.
Like many on the FTE I have upgraded my grille to the special cut-down '05-'07 unit, changed the emblems to '05-'07s and even swapped the headlights to '02-'04s, my present tailgate is 99% perfect and IF I end up getting the '08 up gate I'll super-clean and polish the original up and probably get what I paid for the new one for it.
I have a topper on my truck which I like, so theres no real need for the step to me.
I hear ya, I did that stuff to my '02 when I had it. I have a cap on my current truck, and I'd still give anything for a tailgate with a step on it. I miss the one I had on my F150.
