I think the first tranny to call for it in the super duty's was in 05..Not the 4R100. Actually it was mercon LV In the TF tranny's .I think 04. In 07 ford authorized Mercon V for use in all.the 4r100.
Correct me if i am wrong..
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON(R) can now be serviced using MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.
When mercon V originally came out it didn't have the correct mix for use in the 4r100 tranny's. There were seal issues.cluthch issues etc. Then ford modified it to make it backward compatible for use in the 4r100. In no way do you have to use it but you can.
There were more but don't feel like looking them up
Basically there was one or two for each type of fluid usage. Auto Trans, Standard Trans, Power steering, Transfer case

The 5R110W transmission came on the 6.0L Power Stroke and with the 2005+ 3V engines. It requires Mercon SP or now Mercon LV.
The 4R100 requires Mercon or Mercon V.
In each case, there are compatible synthetic fluids like Amsoil or Royal Purple.
