I don't know if this is related to the "fuel leak from carb" problem I had below. Fixed the leaking fuel inlet at carb using fitting with self-tapping thread and installed an inline filter to replace the one that was at the carb. Ran fine the next day. But the day after that it started real rough and would die whenever I took my foot off the pedal. Here's a non-technical description of "rough": chug...........................chug...chug.chug... ...................chug (lots of engine rocking). Thought maybe one of the plug wires at the distributor was connected wrong, but they match the firing order (and it ran fine the day before). Checked all the vacuum lines and didn't see anything disconnected or connected incorrectly (don't have much experience with this though). But after I removed the air cleaner housing and all it's connections it still ran rough. I can't come up with anything else to look at. But I'm sure you experts will have some suggestions. Any ideas?
You said you installed a new filter? Maybe it's restricting the fuel too much?
Granted I'm not a huge knowledge book on full size motors, but if that's the only thing you added to the equation, it could be that it got dirty in the day of running, or even something stupid simple.
I would go back to what ever you did, and redo it.
I don't know how many times I've cleaned a carb( not having a rebuild kit until a few days and needed it then) and it won't work then ill go off have drink come back do it again and it work flawlessly.
But if you have any other ideas, go for it man, sorry if I wasn't much of a help
Fuel filter. Hmmmm. How could I confirm? It IS the see-thru type with plastic housing. I tried running the engine for a few seconds then running to the front of the truck to see if the filter was full of fuel...it only had a little in it. Do these come with different exclusion/pore ratings? Different membranes for different vehicles or are they basically all the same as far as how fast they pass the fuel thru? Just thinking off the top of my head.
I'm pretty sure a 460 would need a better flow rate then a little four cylinder Toyota, so I would say yes, but I don't know for a fact.
If you could, take the filter off, leave the line running to a cup or bucket and turn the if option on( it wil Lauren the fuel pump on too, do that for a second or two, try it again with the filter on, I figure that should tell you if it's restricting it or not
Dylan,
With the 460, the fuel pump is only triggered when cranking.
The fuel pumps don't cycle like an EFI truck.
Of course, they are running once the oil pressure switch closes.
If the filter is not near full I would think fuel pressure is the issue.
You would definitely see it was full of garbage.
It should be 5/16" I-O, it will flow enough fuel.
Could the problem [chugging] be caused by a small piece of metal partially blocking the idle jet(s)? Perhaps some small metal pieces as a result of having to retap the threads of the fuel inlet.
My first thought was metal shavings / debris introduced into carb. Perhaps holding the needle valve open and causing flooding? Black plugs? Black (rich) exhaust?
Disconnected end of fuel filter and cranked starter with coil disconnected and seems to be passing fuel ok. Will take a look at carb but not exactly sure how to find blockage or how to fix it without taking the whole thing apart.
