im a mobile mechanic in southern california and i have a customer with a 1979 bronco and the previous owner slapped in a 460 out of a 1987 (unsure of model) and it needs a carb rebuild. funny thing is it has a carter carb on it. i did a little research and found only holleys to be used on most 1987s with the 460 on it. now i have the carter carb #, well at least i think its the carb #:d19627s. my main question is was the carter carb used in the mid 80s on the 460 or is this a Frankenstein engine. also if someone knows how to properly decode the carb # ((if thats the right one) lower left front corner) i would really appreciate it, thanks
If it is an old Carter 2-barrel you are dealing with an early Ford enthusiasts old ride. They were extremely common on older 302's and other mills and anyone who had one loved it to death which is likely why it would have been swapped into the big '79. The darned things will idle with the air horn removed and since the fuel bowl is relatively small, off-road enthusiasts loved them in their day. A LOT on early Bronco folks will seek them out for these reasons.
It's probably similar to mine then if it's a 4bbl, does it have the AFB competition band on the front of it?
If so you can find some information on the bottom left corner.
I don't think it would have been the original carb but Carter stopped production in the 1980's. Do you think you could snap a few pictures of it and the model number next time you are messing with it?
Ok, I would just post it here. I don't know a lot about carbs that I haven't owned. But other users can view the pictures and give an opinion on what is wrong.
