Need to build a super sucker quick, fast, and in a hurry... and most importantly on the cheap...

Im going to try a modular tank design with steel drums and propane tanks...

Congrats on getting another supplier. They are hard to get, so hold on to this one for a long time!

 

Got some more of it put together...
Its starting to look like a contraption...







Now i just need to decide how i want to plumb in the drums... 1 feed that splits to both drums from vacuum rig... or in series so one fills... then pulls thru into the other one.

In each of the connections on the barrels with the valve on it... there is a siphon tube going all the way to the bottom...

It holds 30 inches of vacuum so far...

 

Interesting setup. I'm fortunate enough to have a 300gal tank with gas powered vac pump running what can be 150' if needed of 2" hose...

Despite the main pump tanks capabilities, I will still be building a portable unit, my thoughts is a 35gal poly tank with a short hose, wheeled, and a custom made lever piston pump with one way valves for air and oil flow. Just waiting on my new lathe in the mail to machine the parts needed.

I had thought about trying to use an a/c compressor but i would have to give up my 2nd alternator... currently will be just using the harbor freight a/c vacuum pump... it pulled dang near 30" in 5 minutes... if i can run that pump on an inverter.. i will be in great shape.

For my hose.. im going to start small.. 1/2" black well pipe... its stiff enough to hopefully hold up to the vacuum.

 

Granted its larger stuff but this is where I go to get supplies for my setup:

The basic EDPM stuff works great.

 

Ok... so i did end up using some of the 1/2" black well pipe... but only going from the fitting into the bottom of each barrel... that way i can pump everything back out by pressurizing the system... then potentially just hook it up to the air compressor and after the filters... pump str8 into my upflow rigs. Have 2 of those... 2 poly 55 gal drums each...
Those can both be processing simultaneously while any excess gets pumped from truck.. thru filters... into storage barrels to settle a bit more until going into the upflow rigs.


Ive been trying to best prepare myself for this adventure way ahead of time...
Have not even started getting parts yet to convert my truck...
I have a different idea for a heat transfer setup and switching...

And somebody gave The Dr. unfettered access to both those micro machining stations from hf...
The little lathe and the combo mill... most importantly the mill...

The gears have been turning on this one for quite a while.

 

I just got an initial order in to convert my truck, the initial setup is a new fuel switch just before the existing fuel pump and a mega Vegtherm on the fuel just as it exits the tank and another just before the injector pump.

Thinking about getting a temperature switch so when I start up my truck, even if I flip the switch to go to SVO, it won't switch until its warmed up, then I will only have to switch back before shutting down.

The eventual planned system will be a switch at the injector pump with an electric pumped SVO, trucks mech pump on the regular diesel, double filter (each fuel its own), designing a system to use aluminum semi fuel tanks, cut them open to insert a looping high quality SS heat exchanger from the engine on a booster pump and welding it back together. Planned system is to use duel 100-125 Gallon tanks under a custom flatbed I will be putting on my truck. (I need big tanks because I have planned road trips of over 3000 miles).

Love to hear your idea's on converting your truck, I may have to borrow some of the idea's and improve on my own .

 

Im (the intent, anyways...) going to incorporate a bowl delete and full regulated return into a manifold block. There will only be one cv if it works the way i hope it will... check valves... a two pump system... (remember im efuel in my 2000) so ill have my oem system up to where the bowl would be... check valve.. manifold....

Totally Seperate system for the vo... higher pressure on that system...
Kill oem pump... fire up vo pump...
Cv switches nothing other than a return loop...
When i switch on vo... the return cv kicks the return loop over to the vo pickup feed.

Tih from tank to manifold for vo... heat exchanger built into manifold.

Here is the super sucker system all plumbed together. It works like i envisioned it to.
And i can pressurize it to pump oil out...

Threw a little rustoleum on the tanks...
Need to hit the rest of them when i break it down next.

 

So... when you put the vacuum of space on a 55gal steel drum...

This happens... keep it below 22 in hg...

 

OH MY GOD! That's crazy!

 

I highly recommend redoing that setup with black steel and not PVC. PVC will not hold up to UV light and that stuff will break within a year if you leave it exposed to the sun.

 

Or stick to containers that were designed to take pressure or vacuum. 55-gallon drums were designed to hold liquids at atmospheric pressure. Propane tanks work well and are cheap.

 

Pvc and fittings are cheaper...
If you'll notice from the pictures... the use of propane tanks has indeed been implemented as my vacuum volume... and is adequate for my experiment in multi-vessel surface area contrast in negative atmospheres. The intent was a pass thru system where the drums caught whatever i sucked into the system. It worked beautifully. I just need newer vacuum hose. I will be building a large scale version of this little guy using a 250gal propane tank as my vacuum reservoir. Centered on my flatbed... i can stack 55 gal drums all around it and load up with many hundreds of gallons in 1 shot. Might just say heck with vacuum all together and machine myself a new grease pump at the shop.

Again, if you'll notice the whole mood of the thread.. my whole theme for this build was.. try to just use what i had laying around. And as ooober cheap as possible on parts i needed and have it function...

My experiment was a complete success... including the implosion... i mean... who doesnt like a nice implosion now and then?

This project has been disassembled and will be scrapped for parts... long range targets... and i needed a couple new burn barrels anyway...
