The Road Home
About 3 weeks ago I bought my first Ford truck; a 1967 F350 dully flat bed with the long wheel base, 4 speed NP-435, a smoky 360 engine of unknown year (EGR port below non-EGR 2100 carb) and one piece 16" rims. The truck has been sitting in a barn for most of the last 10 years. It had been used a little recently and the owner had replaced the fuel pump thinking that was why it had quit when another potential buyer drove it. It was about a 60 mile trip to get home from where I bought the truck. After the purchase I drove the truck about 2 miles to a gas station and filled it up. Before going to look at the truck I had called ahead and found a local place that had 235/85 R16 tires and that would do an oil change. After putting on new front tires and used tires on the rear I headed home. About 7 miles from home the truck started cutting out and completely died. From the way it acted I suspected fuel starvation. I had the truck hauled the rest of the way home and the next day began to 'go deeper'; checking the condition of fuel system and ignition. What I found was a fuel filter housing half full of rusty crud and a worn out distributor with points that were barely opening. I removed the seat and floor cover, discovering more rust than I expected from my pre-purchase underside inspection. Being that I was working on the truck in my yard I put my tools in the cab at night; being too lazy to carry them back to my tool shed. I was a bit worried about my tools because I live in town and had not received a key to the door locks with the truck. When I removed the fuel tank and started cleaning it out I could hear something rattling around inside it. I stuck my fingers in through the sending unit hole and pulled out two Ford keys. On the ring with the keys was the round metal tag supplied with new vehicles from Ford; that has the code numbers for making replacement keys! I cleaned the 46 years of crud off the keys, lubed the locks, and they worked perfectly. I don't think the locks had ever been used. If the original owner had not passed away a few years ago I would like to ask him how the keys got in the tank.
When I removed the valve covers and found pieces of exhaust valve seals so I started replacing them; hoping to cure part of the oil burning. When I put air to cylinder #2 it had a bad air leak. I removed the head I found that something had gone down the intake and damaged the piston. I have a remanufactured 390 hanging on my engine hoist and after I find answers to some questions it will be installed this week.
I will be posting questions in the 1967 - 1972 F-100 & LargerF-Series Trucks forum about;
The Clutch
Heat Riser
Conversion to HEI ignition
Cooling System
Thanks for reading,
Clay
That`s quite an interesting story and it sounds like you have a good plan for bringing back to life your F350. I did the same with my 71 F350 dually, it had been neglected for most of it`s life as well but running fine now.
Drop into your local chapter and meet the folks there too: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum104/
Reassembly starts tomorrow and hopefully the beast will be running by Monday.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.
While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket
Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).
When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).
Your pic will be placed in the post.
Hope that helps.
