The fuel bowl heater is $40 at riffraff. 2 screws to replace it.
As far a the ICP, it can be run a long time unplugged.
Yeah, even O'Reilly's carries it for way less than $450. Does unplugging the ICP bypass the IDM? I ask because it runs great unplugged and if it doesn't bypass the IDM, it would seem the IDM should be good and I should probably look at the pigtail or something else. Also, I'm thinking the UVCH seems like it wouldn't be the problem with it running fine unplugged. Am I thinking on the right lines?
I think I just need to go pick my truck up and muddle through it myself.
If the truck runs poorly with the ICP plugged in and better with it unplugged, the ICP needs to be replaced. When the ICP is unplugged it defaults to a reading of 724 and makes all other calculations using that presumed measurement.

We thought that was the problem. The ICP was replaced yesterday and it still ran rough at idle. If we bring the RPMs up everything smooths out. Maybe more the pigtail?
Edit:
We were out and about and decided to swing by the shop and see where we were at. The mechanic was out working on the truck. He had just cleaned the fuel bowl and filled it with tranny fluid and was going to drive it hard to see if it would possibly blow out. Said the buzz test checked out OK and it wasn't throwing any IDM codes, so he didn't think it was the IDM. He checked the pigtail and that checked out fine, too. We'll see what he says when he calls.
Talked to the mechanic. He said the fuel pressure reads OK (60 PSI) and the control pressure is at 470 PSI at idle. He said he talked to a friend of his (a prior Ford mechanic?) and with all the symptoms he gave him, they've come up with the #1, #2, and #8 injectors are bad. I'm not sure that's correct. He says when the ICP is disconnected, the pressure jumps up to ~700 PSI and lets those injectors work correctly. Plug it in, the pressure drops and the injectors don't fire right and I have a rough idle. I just can't see going from a good running truck to 3 bad injectors just like that - no smoke at all out of the tail pipe. I suppose anything's possible, but I don't think so this time. I'll be getting it back tonight and I'll run through all the checks that I've gleaned from my intense 7.3 studies - UVCH's, ICP pigtail, etc.
You need to run a cct and rotational velocity test to see if the injectors are firing properly. Did he do that. Or look to see if.oil is coming out the holes in the injectors?
I thought I read a thread about this a while ago and the same thing would happen when unplugging the Icp, but it.turned out to be the IPR.
LOL! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, my $$$ keeps going to the shop. Well, this one last time.

He said he did and at idle it failed, but running the RPMs up it all checked out.
I did change the IPR last month. I'll do a little checking this weekend and see what I can see.

There is a problem with the ICP somewhere. He just proved it.
I sure hope you're right. It just doesn't sound right that the truck runs fine and all of the sudden I lose 1/3 of my injectors all at once - no other indications.
That sounds good, Trey. Although, I hope I have it fixed by then. We're suppose to take the trailer out the end of June. Although, you can still stop by and check it out.
More like, a problem with the mechanic. Ya, lets fill the fuel bowl with trans fluid and run'r hard..givmeabreak!
Go get your truck dude. Would've been my move, with the 450 dollar phone call for fuelbowl.
Got my truck back home - all safe and sound, now. These are the notes that were on the work order when I picked it up.
I have a friend (Ford mechanic for a few years) coming this weekend with an NGS scanner. We're going to change the oil to, at least, make sure we have a good baseline oil wise. We'll run some tests and see what we can come up with. He's a little cheaper - a few beers, some chow.
And, ref to the above note, customer changed his mind on the heater when he found out how big the reaming would be...
