Wow, tough crowd. Haha. Yes, I shopped around. That price was given to me by 2 Ford houses. My personal mechanic told me 10-12k for a used/rebuit motor.
I baby my trucks and my cars and my Harleys. I am very ocd when it comes to maintenance. Every fluid and filter changed on time. I keep very detailed records.
So to answer a smart *** question, it never ran hot, and was full of clean oil.
As far as the cause, I am not sure. It dropped cyliner #2 badly and has no compression. My point for this post was, if you think something is not right, it's not.
I have been putting off trading this truck off for 2 months.
Although it is a major in-convenience and very costly, I am not all that bitter.
Hope to pick up my '13 this week.
Cheers
Man... People here can be mean.
The explanation makes you seem a little more level headed than your original post led to. I think people were jumping on you when you were just frustrated. That does suck!!! Especially if you take care of it.

Why you say smart ***? We don't anything about it.......I don't care now.
Maybe the original poster was a troll, maybe he wasn't. But it is a valid point. The thing is these new diesel engines are so expensive to repair or replace when internal parts fail it really doesn't make sense to own them after the warranty expires. And it's not just Ford, either.

That, along with original price, clacking noise, and smoke makes me not like them.

Anything made past 1/07 isn't going to smoke or clack much. But I agree with your other points, and that's why I don't imagine I'll own another diesel.

What did they do? Some kind of a pre-fire or double fire thing?

Split shot injectors started with the 7.3L engines. Starting with the 6.4L engines the common-rail injection system was capable of multiple injection events per stroke, and that quieted the engines down quite a bit. Also starting with the 6.4L engines was the diesel particulate filter(DPF) that traps and burns off soot before it leaves the tail pipe.
Strangely enough my new EcoBoost F150 sounds more like my '11 6.7L PSD than any other gas engine I've ever had.
