Both fuel gauges read Empty?

Have a '89 F150 w/ dual tanks. Last week my fuel gauge registered at E and will not change even if I switch tanks. The pumps are working, the tanks are switching. And yes, I filled the tanks!

The problem occured at once. Never had fluctuations with gauges before. I did have the fuel filter replaced about a month ago.

Any ideas?

The gauges read empty at low resistance, and full at high resistance - or open. Sounds like you have a short to ground at the switch, or a defective gauge.

Thanks. By "switch" do you mean the tank selector switch on the dash?
