I am looking at a 2000 Excursion V-10 4x4 Limited.
The rig has 280,000 on it. All maintance done at dealer, used for pulling an 8 stall horse trailer from Kansas to Montana. When not in use it was garage kept. This is my grandma's boyfriend selling it. He is asking $4000. I printed of a check list from here on things to look at all is in great shape.
What your guys thoughts on this. I am new to fords never owned one before. I will be using this to tow my jeep to trails. trailer will weigh about 4500 and about 200 in cargo area for gear.
Even if it has proper maintenance, that is alot of miles on the chassis. It is alot of highway miles, I understand, but alot of miles non-the less especially for a V10. If you buy it, don't be shocked if you need to replace any of the drivetrain pieces in the near future. If its your grandmas bf, perhaps he can do a little better than $4000 with all this in mind.
Just got the all clear from the dealer inspection on excursion. They said if they did not know better they would swear it was brand new off the lot. Everything checked out perfect. All cyclinders were within %5 of each other and all fluids looked great. The dealer has all records of everthing that has been done to it since new. Right down to the ball joints being replaced at 220k.

A good rebuild on a trans is 2k, Rear end bearing work is over 1k. Wow 280,000 is alot of miles for a gas motor. Be prepared to replace drive train components in the near future. 4k is pretty high given the miles were spent pulling. Being maintained at the dealer sometimes isn't the best thing, they tend to overlook the little issues and just throw parts at it. I honestly dont think that trans has much more left in it, the early 4R100's were king in its day 13 years ago. I would also suspect rear end work in the future as well. As for suspension I suspect its also in need of some new springs after all that. An 8 stall dry isn't too bad but loaded is another story! Figure each horse roughly weighs 1,000lbs x 8 plus a 5,000# trailer 15k is pretty heavy and I dont think an EX can take that abuse for 280k. I can't say I have ever seen a pumper pull 8 stall, most anything above a 4 out here is all 5th wheel or goosenecks!
Jeez. I'd assume any value has been driven out of that Ex but if a qualified 3rd party with nothing to gain gives it the OK then it can't be too bad.
Is the engine and transmission original and not rebuilt? If so I'd still be concerned about metal fatigue with that many miles, regardless of how it checks out. That is a tremendous amount of miles on that drivetrain, regardless of how it was taken care of ESPECIALLY if it was towing.
Tranny was replaced at 250k. I plan on putting arb lockers in it in sept so I'll replace all bearings in the front and rear then. Since I live in Denver and it will be towing to trails the lockers are a must. If I notice and sagging once trailer is hooked up i'll just throw a 4in lift and air bags. I do all my own work so I'll only be in it for parts not labor at a shop. No matter if I got this one or another lockers were always in the plan and probly the lift.
I think we just got lucky and found a really good rig that was actualy taken care of and had stuff replaced when it was time instead of waiting for something to break.
I want to thank everyone for all the info. You have made a new ford member for life. I would have never considered a chevy or dodge with this many miles, but from everything I read and talking to two different dealerships and three independent shop, and then talking to you guys the ford v-10 is a great engine if taken care of and will last a long time. I'll post pics as soon as I get her home.
The only thing drivetrain that should ever give trouble is the trans. The motor and rear end should go 500K+ no problem.
The rest will be just odds and ends like alternator, starter, water pump, brake parts, shocks, and stuff. I wouldn't worry about the miles much. Like I said the only thing miles effects is the trans.
