My Son has a '91 with the 5.0 engine... His Oil Pump started making noise... He convinced me thayt he needed it working immediately soooooo...
We have the pump, gaskets etc... Managed to get the bolts out of the Oil Pan... and that's pretty much where it sits... We have the Y pipe loose, but can't get the pan down due to the front X-Member...
Can I crack the motor mounts loose and jack up the front of the motor to finish the job??? or do I get the tranny bolts loose and slide it back 2-3"
Yes, there are many opportunities to crush fingers and hands here; be careful. By unbolting the motor mounts, you will be able to raise the engine a few inches, which may allow you to remove the pan from the engine. From there it won't be that difficult to do the oil pump. Be aware that the oil pump is driven by a shaft that slides into the bottom of the distributor; it is possible to install the oil pump but not have the shaft in the bottom of the distributor. I made this mistake from the top of a 460 once (shaft in dizzy but not pump) and my shaft was consequently re-shaped and I had to extract it from the block.
I am also curious how it was he determined that the oil pump was making noise. What kind of noise was it making? Did you check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage before you began the teardown?
without taking off the upper intake it is impossible to raise the engine enough to slide the pan out. a ford tech friend of mine told me the easiest way is to slide the tranny back the 3 inches you need to remove the pan.
This is not true, I just finished mine yesterday without removing the upper intake.
According to the Haynes and what I did
1) remove battery cable
2) remove starter (gives you more room to work)
3) remove oil filter (more room)
4) unbolt motor mounts
5) now you can either jack from the bottom of the oil pan or the tranny bell housing. I jacked from the pan first but didn't get the motor high enough so I had to jack from the bell. Use several 2x4"s for padding. You can put a small piece of 2x4 in between the motor mount and frame. I did that as back up and let the motor sit on the jack.
6) unbolt the pan and lower.
7) You cannot remove the pan from the block without removing the oil pick up tube. There is one nut (9/16 maybe) that holds the middle of the tube and two 1/2" bolts to the pump.
8) unbolt and drop the pickup tube into the pan (you should have drained the oil I hope)
9)pull the pan out, you may have to rotate the crank to clear.
10)Remove the oil pump
11)Clean everything and reinstall.
Did you get a melling high volume pump? That is what everyone recommended to me.
It really isn't that hard of a job once I knew what I was doing. I got side tracked as autozone sold me the wrong gasket. It took a while to scrape off the left over sealant, again! I would highly recommend getting a once piece gasket that does not require a sealant. I got a felpro for the second one and it was so easy.
For reference incase you miss the sig I have a 90 5.0 so it should be the same.
So here we are the end of the 2nd day.... After finding out that the ONLY reason it needed to be immediately (rather than leave it at the shop) was that he "had plans for last night"... I pretty much made him do the rest of the work... I spent 6 hours under the truck working on it thinking that he was going on an interview (like he said) and needed the transportation...
Now before any ask Why didn't I let him drive my truck... My insurance company and I fought for 5 months to get him OFF my policy... I basically had to Swear on my mothers' life he would NEVER get behind the wheel of my vehicles again (a whole nother story)... He only has Liability ins... if something were to happen... YUP on my company to fix....
Back to the story....
In the wonderful DC rain this morning (after the wake-up call that I was told wouldn't happen - we worked until 1:00 AM)... He told me why he needed the truck working... At that point I was an ADVISOR only - gotta learn sometime right??? - printed off the step-by-step instructions from the Autozone site (Chiltons pages)... he tried to shortcut them and ended up in a little trouble... and basically just put it back together... Oil Pump is still the original... in the process one exhaust stud was broken... rather than fix it, he liked the LOUD sound.....
It's on the road and I thank you all for your advice.... I'd rebuild the entire thing for him, should I get the truth for once..... maybe in time
tim330 you werereally able to get the pan off without taking the upper intake out. i did my oil pan gasket about a month ago and could not jack the engine high enough from any place to get inside and remove the pick up tube. now i have a 91 5.8 maybe this makes a difference. i removed all the items you stated.with no luck. i never removed the upper intake but it was hitting the firewall and i assumed i needed to take it off to get the extra 2 inches needed.
It must be the difference between the 302 and 351 then. I fully removed the pan so I could clean and paint it. It was a little tight but nothing crazy.
