I have a new to me 03 F250 with the 6.0. Trucks appears to have been taken care of for the most part, and runs well. Something that I just started to notice is a sound I can only relate to a pump noise followed by a load hiss of air being released. I can hear this only at idle and appears to be coming from the left rear of the engine. So far I have been unable to locate the exact location. Anyone have any ideas or run into this before?
Since recently buying the truck have done the oil change, coolant flush after radiator replacement, replaced the sway bar links. Truck has 140k miles and is running strong.
My f350 is also an 03.if u turn ur key to on position and listen u will here what sounds like a small compressor running in the area ur talking about its just to the left of ur a.c. Box on the passenger fender just in front of the hood hinge.i believe it's a vacuum pump.yuo may have a leak in one of the vac lines.i would start there. Hopefully I'll find it easily.good luck
Would this cycling also result in a release of air? It truly sounds like a high pressure air release. The release is coming from the left rear as far as I can tell. Will check all the various turbo boots, but if there was a crack would I not hear the air release all the time?
I was thinkin with a user name like Charlie Bravo you would know left as sitting in the seat. Really the only thing back there is exhaust. Maybe like Wulfman was thinking turbo sweep and a crack at the expansion joint on the up pipe.
Good on the expansion joints. No air from there and no soot. Thanks for the tip Wulfman.
Time to get out the spare vac. hose and start probing to see if I can pinpoint the source of the leak. Neighbors will think I have lost my mind to see the hose in my ear.
Pretty close. That is followed by the air release, and quite loud for about 30 seconds. A minute of silence and it starts all over again. Almost sounds like the old smog pumps from the 70's gas burners.
When I turn the key on mine (early '04), when the dinging of the gong stops
to help me know when the Glow-plugs have warmed, I can hear the fuel pump (frame rail under my butt), whirrrrr an sometimes I hear the blend
door open and a whooossh sound of escapeing air. Is that what you hear????
