I have a '77 F250 with a 400m, it has true dual exhaust with thrush turbo mufflers. it sounds pretty good its just not very loud. you really have to get in the throttle to hear the truck. however it has lots of power. I was just wondering if anyone had ever experienced a loss in power by switching from a muffler to glass packs, or possibly just straight pipes.
Its all about the right amount of back pressure, from what I understand. I doubt you will notice the power difference if you change out to a more open style muffler or straights.
Are they now turn outs in front or behind the rear axle, or straight out the back bumper? If you run straights out the back there is a chance you will get a mind numbing "drone" sound when running down the highway.
Loud pips might sound cool, but some times attract unwanted attention, meaning LEO.
The Thrush turbo mufflers are pretty restrictive, read quiet, mufflers.
In the cut-aways below you can see the convoluted path the exhaust gases are forced to take, nice design if you want a quiet ride but not so nice if you want a more aggressive tone to your exhaust.
A muffler with a straight-through design would be a better option, or if you want louder, glasspacks or straight pipes.
if your looking for glasspacks and want it loud, id recommend summit glasspacks, i have them on my 78 and its a tad louder then my friends dodge with straight pipe and it still has awesome power
