Was thinking I probably need to rebearing the rear end in whitey ford. How hard of a job is this and will I need any special tools?

It's not hard. For comparison it's alot like replacing the bearings in a Dana 50 front axle. You'll need the special socket for the spindle nut, you can get one at O'rileys. You'll also have to replace the hub seal cause when you pull the seal to replace the inner hub bearing, it won't be re-usable. You'll need something to drive the new seal back in the hub, I made a tool to do it but anything you can set on the seal and drive it in place will work.

Just curious. what makes you feel the bearings are bad? I have the wheel/backend "HOP" at 45mph and think maybe this could be the cause.

thx

Guzzle has a write up, his link is in my sig. Also if you look at the "tex" link in my sig, there's a write up for when I did my rear wheel seals.

I'm assuming you just want to do the outer bearings correct? The inners are a whole different ball game.

Are the inners really tough?

Never done them, but I'll put it to you this way: Cleatus12r said he'd sooner rebuild a 4r100 transmission than replace gears in the rear axle. I'm pretty sure the gears and shims and all that has to come out to get to the inner bearings. So yeah, unless you are knowledgable enough about the gears and can set the backlash and what not, I'd say it's tough.

Again, I've never done it, but the same people that were encouraging me that I could rebuild a transmission were saying the rear gears were no joke. And I'm just assuming the inner bearings involve removing the gears.

The outers seem easy enough. I had them out when I did the seal, but I didn't get the race out.

Jeffrey is talking about the inner bearings in the differential. The rear hubs have inner and outer bearings as well. Remove the 8 bolts holding the axle shaft in, pull the axle shaft out and you'll see the spindle nut. Remove the spindle nut using the special socket and you'll see the outer bearing. Remove the outer bearing and you'll see the race for that bearing. Pull the hub off of the spindle and look at the back of it and you'll see the hub seal. Lay the hub down so your looking thru the front of it and take a pieceo pipe or something similar and take a BFH and drive the inner bearing and hub seal out. This will destroy the seal but it has to be replaced anyway. Now all you're left with in the hub are the inner and outer races. Take same pipe and BFH and drive the races out. Clean hub, replace with new parts in opposite order in which you removed the old ones. Now as far as the bearings and seals in the differential, yeah I don't mess with them!
