Hello guys. I have a 86 f150 302 that needs rebuilt. However its my daily ride. So I bought a 94 302 to drop in it just havent done it yet. Problem is the 94 is MAF where the 86 is not. I can get my hands on everything I need for the conversion if I decide to go mass air. My question for you guys is, would it be worth it to go MAF? Also what could i do as far as getting the most power without machine work? Looking to spend 500 - 700 bucks. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance
If your not rebuilding it yourself you probably cant touch the parts for a rebuild for 5~700 bucks. Especially any go fast goodies.
If you have 5~700 to just spend on parts besides the rebuild cost id look at dome type pistons to increase compression. Port match your heads to your gasket size/manifold size whitch ever is bigger. A longer duration cam to cram a bit more air and fuel in.
In all honesty you could gain 50hp with those changes max. Thats at the crank. By the time it hit the wheels you may have 25~30hp boost. In my opinion that little bit just aint worth it unless your a paid racer. If you want real power it will cost alot more. Best advice is step up to a 351.
Also port match wouldnt cost you anything but a extra set of both manifold gaskets incase you booger one up, some masking tape, a dremel or air grinder with bits, and your time grinding out some material and then smoothing/polishing the runners.
With a fuel injected engine, i would not do too much to it, the computer will not like it. You can do some modifications if you like messing around with wires and fuel injection computers.
If it's your daily driver and the 94 engine is good mechanically, I would drop the 94 in the truck, with all the 86 top dress on it, so the computer still thinks it's dealing with a 86 engine.
I know I am no fun, but daily driver needs to run and get you there and back, and fuel mileage is nice also.
