I did a search and it looks like problems with fuel guages aren't rare. I didn't see any conclusive answers on any fixes, or trouble shooting tips.
Maybe we could get collect that info in this post?
My gauges fluctuate quite a bit and it is nearly impossible to tell how much gas is in there.
The fuel gauges on my vehicles are a convenience only. I do not depend on them to determine how long it will be before I start walking. Instead I use miles driven since the last refueling. In my experience most fuel indicators are inaccurate. Now that newer vehicles have an independent fuel low level sensor, knowing when the tank is empty is a little more accurate, but miles driven is still my way of knowing when to refuel. At about 225 miles on the front tank I switch to the rear, and after about another 210 miles I will fill up both tanks (17 & 16 gallons respectivly). Doing the math that leaves about 2-3 gallons in the tanks in case I'm off a little. And, keeping MPG records for the almost 11 years I have had my F-150 continues to confirm the 13-15 MPG I get using this vehicle around town.
I use fuel flow and time, starting with a known number of gallons in the tanks, when flying my airplane because I do not believe those indicators either.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Jul-02 AT 04:22 PM (EST)]The fluctuation is caused by corrosion on the housing of the sending unit, which is the ground portion of the signal from it.
It can be "fixed" but it's almost too much trouble to pull the assembly and not replace it with a new one.
I cleaned mine. There are some picture on my web site.
