Does anybody use these trucks as a daily driver? I got a 73 highboy and put a new 390 motor with all new components, fuel pump/lines, carb, distrbuter, plugs, i went through and rebuilt alot of the truck I've been working on it almost all night for 3 months straight, it ran ok for a day, had no power couldnt get out of 3rd gear so I got a differant new rebuilt carb and it still didnt run that great, and now it wont start at all. I've put a lot of money into this truck that wont even start now and when it does its pretty much worthless so if this is how its going to be when everything on it is new I think im gonna tear it apart and sell what I can off it and junk it
Boo, Don't know you or your skill level. You may need to take it to someone that can tune an old Ford truck. Sounds like tuning may be all that is needed.
No disrespect intended, but you are throwing the word "new" around a lot. There is no such thing as a "new" 390. And I don't think there is a such thing as a "new" motorcraft or autolite carburetor. If "rebuilt" is what you mean to say, then there could still be internal problems that you are automatically disregarding when you consider something to be new. Rebuilders do make mistakes. Also, just because a part is new, doesn't mean it couldn't be bad. I have seen in several other posts that there seems to be a rash of bad new fuel pumps running around. Maybe if you could post a little more info about the engine and what it is actually doing when you try to start it, someone could help you troubleshoot it a little better. Please don't write the truck off and scrap it because it has a couple of problems. I consider it a sin to send any classic vehicle to the shredder. These trucks can very easily be daily drivers once the bugs are worked out of them.
