Air Intake Question??

I was thinking about adding a K&N set up,but I read on here that a lot of Guys think the stock Air Intake is better. So I guess I'll just add a K&N Filter to my Stock Air-Box.But the question I have is this.I started looking at Pics of different 5.0 stock Engines to see their Stock Air Intakes, and I've noticed that some Trucks have a Dual Hose all the way to the Air Box Lid,and others like mine has a Dual into one Hose that goes into the Air Box Lid.So I was wondering why some come with Dual Hose's,and some come with the Dual into one?

Speed Density trucks = 2 seperate hoses from the Throttle Body to the Airbox.

Mass Air Flow trucks = 2-1 hoses from the Throttle Body to the Airbox.

Is there a certain year they switched over from SD to MAF? Or was it certain engines that got one thing or the other?

Yep, split intake hoses are MAF and two hoses is SD.

Don't even waste your money on a KN filter. They are a royal hassle to clean and re-oil etc. There is extremely little or no gain from them, expect maybe more dirt in your engine.

The stock air box with the 4.9/7.5 tube and a good filter is the way to go.

Now, I see people recommend the 4.9/7.5 intake tube to the grill. However, when I looked at how it works, it doesn't even line up with the grill openings. I really don't see how it would be any better than the above radiator one. As for the K&N, I would spend the money. I only run a drop in because I caught the thing on sale on amazon, and ended up only paying $19 for it shipped to my door.

1994.5-1995 certain trucks got MAF/OBD-1, and then in 1996, they ALL got OBD2 and MAF.

Except the F250/F350's, IIRC (Cali trucks were alittle wonky and got OBD-1/MAF, in the F250/350's I think)

As with Evan, I would reccomend the K&N Drop In, $60 filter, because it's just a washable version of the OEM ones.

But also, the I6/460 tube from the Radiator Support to the Airbox is better than the 302/351 tube that sits on top of the core support, to the airbox.

Straighter airflow, and better cool air to choose from (The engines will ONLY flow X amount, you're simply giving it a better choice) versus it having to suck air from the little strip of space between the hood/grille.

Where's a good place to get the 4.9/460 Hose? I don't have any Salvage Yards near me,and I'm not sure what exactly the parts called? Do you think Ford still sells it,or one of the NOS Parts Places? Does anybody have a Part number for it..If I can get one of those,I'll just slap it on with the K&N and be done......

I don't think Ford sells it as NOS...

It's called the lower Intake Tube, IIRC.

to expand on Wes's post, its called either the lower air intake or 4.6 intake, IIRC the tube (found one and put it in my truck) cane on the 4.6 engines (I forget exactly what years) but they should be able to be had at your local Ford dealer, they may have to order it though, If needed I could swing by the local dealer after work and see if I can get a part number.

FWIW, project MPG found the k&n panel filter in the stock intake box insulated with thermal tape to give more torque and mpg than the FIPK k&n intake:

I went down this bunny hole a few years ago when I was searching for a 4.9/7.5L intake tube. Ford does not make it anymore and no one I contacted who specializes in NOS parts had one either.

I think this is the Ford part number for the air tube: E7TE-9C675-BC
