Brakes

I have a 2000 250 SD V10. I'm looking to install new front brakes. I've never done it before but with some advise and you tube I should be ok. My question is what brand of brakes should I buy and should I buy a complete kit with new rotors? Or just have rotors turned? Any advise would be appreciated.

If your doing any towing I would recommend the Hawk LTS pads and power slot cryo treated rotors at least for the fronts. The rears I used the Hawk LTS Pads and orielly's rotors. A lot of people use the hawk power slot setup with great results and will definitely keep from warping. Here is a picture of my fronts:

Hawk brakes and cryo slotted rotors are overkill unless you are doing some serious towing. There is only disputed evidence as to the efficacy of cryo treated rotors anyway.

For the average Joe who maybe tows up to 6000-8000lbs a few times per year, a set of brakes from your favorite auto store will suffice. Except AutoZone. Bleh.

EBC brakes are a good compromise. They get you away from the parts store brands, which out getting into ridiculous pricing. They are a good performance brake that will be good for daily use and towing.

As far as rotors go, if you have never changed them before, change them. Even if the PO just did it (so he says.. ). That way you know what they are and when they were put on. Rotating rotors, or even resurfacing them, are just cheap ways to buy a little more time. If you are at that point, you should just replace them.

I personally have had a lot of luck with Bosch brakes and love them. Our 02 has them and they work great and we tow quite a bit. Since this is your first time I would buy a whole kit it is easier by far as I know when I got them at carquest they are together. To me I would just replace the rotor as if you are in there mine as well replace everything you can that's what we always do. By everything I mean rotors, pads, and if they look terrible the calipers.
