Transmission Question

My plan has been to swap out the 4 speed (non synchro) box on my 52 M-3 for the well documented T5 box. However finding a decent used T5 is becoming an increasingly difficult task (I've been looking for over a year)

Recently I got a line on a 5 speed from a 96 S10. However when I went to see it turned out to be a Muncie (GM Part # 15015873) possibly a 5LM60 unit. It appears to be very similar to pictures of the T5 transmission ( shifter position, etc) The price of this tranny is good (free), but I don't want to get it if won't work.

My question, has anyone used or had experience with this box, and how does it differ from the T5 unit?

Well I did some digging, and unfortunately it will not work as the bell housing is not removable as it is part of the transmission housing.

Oh well....the search continues!!

If you are willing to pay shipping, I run across a non-WC just about every time I go to the junkyard. Plenty of S10's and GMC 15's around here... I'd bet one can be had closer to ya, just not in your local micro area.

Post-'94 or so, S-10's went to an Aisin trans. It has few of the T5's virtues. Even the '91-'93 S-10's had a T5 that is different, with the Ford bolt pattern.

Really appreciate the offer, but the shipping would probably cost more than the tranny. I will be spending some time this summer near Allentown PA, and I will be checking out the salvage yards in that area. Here at home around the Toronto area you are lucky to find anything older than 10 years in the "recycling depots".

Ive got three mid to late 80's t-5's with the mechanical speedo. One will hopefully be going in my f1?

There seems to be a few still around here. (Salt Lake) Everytime I happen to be at a pick and pull i look, which isnt very often. Usually its the newer ones with electronic speedos- I keep walking.

I wish you were closer, I'd make you an offer on one of those T-5s.
