Wall Covering

Hello all... I have a large Garage. I devided the garage into 2 sides. My wife and I park on one side, and I have an area to park 2 cars on the other side with an area about the width of a f150 for my tools and work bench, anyway the new wall I just put up. it's just a wood frame, I need some advice on what to cover the wall with. I like dry wall (and it's cheap) but it requires finishing or it looks like crap. I have thought of thin OSB (more expensive and a bit harder to work with), and I also thought of 4x8x1/2 foam, but this is even more expensive than the OSB. Any other suggestions? I wanna have this wall done soon so I can build my new work bench.

Jim

I use 7/16" OSB for these applications. It does not break if you bump it with something like sheetrock will. It will also hold a screw or nail if you want to hang a rake etc unlike SR. I just paint the OSB with a sealer or primer coat and then a finish coat of paint. If you want a little fire resistance use a fire retardant paint. OSB may be a little higher than SR per sq foot but when you factor in mudding and taping the difference goes away. I find OSB to be easier to work with than SR.

The parts of my garage that weren't sheetrocked by the builder are now covered with 1/2 inch plywood. Same idea as the osb. I used plywood because Home Depot had a big stack of it right by the front door, and it was cheap. It won't finish as nice as osb, because it is CDX and has knots, but it holds a screw just as well.

i'd say drywall the side where your wife and you shall be parking finish and paint it, then use osb on the side you'll do work on maybe even some pegboard. now is the time to add any outlets in the wall and any other neat ideas you may want to try out.

I agree - OSB is cost-effective and versatile. Just make sure you mount it smooth side out

A fiberglass/plastic type of sheet material purchased at any home improvement store works great over a OSB or sheetrock backing. It can handle water and is easy to keep clean. I installed that in my house garage so that when I wash the vehicles it wont get the plywood wet. Another thing I wish I had done was put in some lighting in the walls.

It's called FRP (for fiberglass reinforced panel) but it's kind of expensive, especially if you're covering a large area. You glue the sheets right to the wall and add trim pieces at the joints. It's nice bacause it is waterproof and really easy to clean. Might be a bit too expensive for a garage IMHO.
