Question

New valve lifters???

running 351-M engine in 81 F-150 Custom 4x4. Just completed 900 mile round trip through the mountains and the truck ran strong. Only problem is on start up I hear a lot of tappet noise until it runs for awhile {about 5 minutes}. Should I tear it down and put in new lifters? Thanks; Webster:-

New valve lifters???

Your lifter are gummed up and wont get free untill the oil warms up and thins out. Try a motor flush and she what happens

Some people have had good luck adding a little ATF also. Not to much though. It should free them up if that's the problem.

Also try running a Motorcraft oil filter- they are the only ones I have run that the motor doesn't knock on startup.
