Exhaust frustrations

I am in the process of replacing an exhaust (down pipe back) The two bolts that attach it to the down pipe were so rusted that they came to a point so they just snapped when i tried to remove them. They are welded to the down pipe. Any suggestions?

is it a stock downpipe or an aftermarket one"?

(Does it look like a flat tube or a round tube?)

Lightbulb Ran into the same thing

I ran into the same problem ...

95' PSD.
Was deleting my cat.
Nuts snapped right off.
I drilled them out.
But, if I were you I would go to a good muffler shop.
They might be able to salvage the adaptor.
I found a small shop in Michigan that deleted my cat & muffler,
repaired the flange and installed 3 inch pipe back to the bend
at the rear differential for $185.00.

Good Luck !

If your replacing your downpipe, just get the reciprocating saw out and go to town on it. Cut it on half and wiggle it out of there.

3 inch is too small...3.5 is stock exhaust.

Stock is SQUISHED down to about 2" on the narrow dimension. 3.5 won't fit without a body lift. 3" fits only by modifying the flange between the firewall and floor.

Hes not talking about just the down pipe. Hes saying they installed 3 inch pipe all the way out the back. After the stock DP, the stock exhaust is 3.5 in. # inch is a downgrade.

D'OH, missed the "at the differential" part (why did he put that in a separate paragraph?...). Never mind....

I put a 3 1/2" DP in my 96 that doesn't have a lift. It just that's a lot of porta powering and cussing!

Auto or manual tranny? IIRC, the E4OhDear leaves a little more room.

Auto but it wasn't easy at all. It took me all day to porta power it and get it in there. I wouldn't do it again but at the time got a heck of a deal on the entire exhaust system.

I cant imagine the 5 speed having any less room than the auto. Mine wasa darn tight squeeze with the e40d. We'll see in a few days when i bolt up my zf5.
