Looking at a 86 f350 diesel with a aftermarket turbo truck has 200k tranny 20k. it drains battery if it sits to long. What do you guys think he wants 3,000 obo. Any suggestions?
If the body is in good shape with no rust, sounds like it would not be too bad of a deal. It should have the straight dana 60 front axle under it, and the turbo will make it go. If it has the 3 speed automatic(the c6) the mileage will not be too great and the rpms will be a little high on the interstate, but it will be great for local driving.
Sounds like it has some electrical issues, which if that scares you, you might need to re-consider it. At least he was honest and told you about it.

Just bought an 86 f250 4x4 with a idi it has a perfect body no rust 182000 no issues at all for 1100.00.. then after I bought it I found two more trucks identical one with extra cab and the other a f350 for plus minus 200.00....my point I think I would talk him way down and harp on the electrical issues.

All batteries will drain if they sit too long question is how long is long? You need a lot of cranking power for these old diesels so you need to make sure the charging system is up to par. For 3k you should be able to score a truck of that vintage with little to no issues.
I decided to turn it down because it looked kinda half assed. To be honestim looking at two trucks one is another 86 f250 HD diesel non turbo 4spd with 179k on it. The other is a 88 f150 that the guys said it started running like crap and is selling it for 500 dollars and its in great shape from the pictures.
You can barely buy an IDI engine for less than 1k around here, its stupid how backwards the local market is. Almost impossible to get a nice truck for less than 5k, much less a diesel or god forbid a turbo diesel!
