Tailgate Window Motor
My back window never went up or down with out someone "heliping it" which usually meant pushing withh all oour might. The weatherstripping in the rear window was shot. I replaced that. I greased all the rollers and moving parts. The damn window still doesnt go up and down all the way. Could it be the motor?
I took off the panel and couldnt find the motor. Where is it and how the hell do i replace it.
Is there another option besides buying a new motor?
its a 89 EB 351w.
The motor is attached to the regulator. If I remember correctly, you first remove the window to access the regulator. Make sure the regulator action is smooth and not too tight. Lubricate when removed.
Check the plastic drive gear in the motor assembly that engages the rack gear of the regulator. This was my problem. A plastic gear kit is about $20 from Napa. You can test the motor out of the circuit. They are dc motors and pretty much bulletproof. The plastic gear is designed to be the "weak" link and fail w/o damaging something else if the window binds. Since your's is hard to move, I would suspect the plastic gear has failed.
1) Lower window to fully down
2) Lower tailgate
3) Remove access panel
4) Release window from regulator and remove window
5) Remove regulator
6) Replace soft rubber window guides at each end.
7) Remove motor from regulator and access plastic drive gear in motor housing.
As they say, installation is reverse of removal. Once you open the tailgate, all becomes clear. Take your time on the window/regulator attachments. They are fragile and easy to break.
Make sure window slides up/down in the guides easily. I believe you can adjust the guide supports at each end of tailgate to avoid any binding action.
good luck
