7.3 sometimes will start sometimes won't

Have a '02 with a manual, sometimes it will start other times it won't turn over. The relay is clicking under the dash even the times it doesn't start, dash lights go off when turning key, tap on starter and nothing. Should I replace the clutch sensor next? Anything else to look at?

Thanks

welcome to fte. clicking relays is usually a sign of week voltage, I would first clean all the connections on both battery's , even if they look clean. then charge the system and see what happens. that's a good place to start so you know that's not an issue

As Chris said, clicking relays is a sure sign of weak voltage. You need to have the batteries load tested and I would put a charger on them and see if it improves the crank time. If it does, you have at least confirmed it is the charging system. The cables on your truck are over 11 years old and they could have corrosion underneath the rubber coating as well. You should cut a slit in the ends and carefully peel it back and look at the condition of the braid. If it isn't a nice clean copper color, your cables could be the issue. If it has a powdery green substance in it, you will heed to replace them.

Get your batteries load tested, just because they show 12v dont mean you have the amps to turn the truck over.

if you have a chip, it would be a good idea to pull it out and return the truck to stock while trouble shooting your issue as well. also, separate your battery's when testing them . keep us posted on things as you go, we'll help you get it figured out.

Well I think I figured it out, I slit the cable that was clean. I put new Interstate battery's in last year so they should be good but have not tested them. But long story short I went to start it no go. Came back later and just wanted to make sure that the relay was clicking put my finger on it while turning key, started right up. Took finger off relay it would just click like it had before and no start, so I will either zip tie it tight to the panel or get a new relay hoping its a little tighter fit. I sure hope this the problem, seems like it so far. Thanks guys.

you might trying cleaning the contact points, and heard of people tinning relay spades with solder to tighten up connection or replace the panel or connectors inside,if possible.

Glad to hear that you may have found it. (I was going to say glad to hear you put your finger on the problem). Please keep us posted.
