Help have coolant leak.

I have coolant leaking from behind the lowest pulley on the engine. It kind of looks like the bracket holding the pulley has a seal behind it that might be leaking. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? It is a 7.3l on a 2001 Excursion. Figures I just noticed that the coolant was low yesterday and today I take it for a drive and find a coolant trail down the driveway after it was parked for a few hours. Could it be the water pump? http://www.superdutypsd.com/water_pump_article.php

Coolant should be coming from somewhere above there. If that seal/gasket leaks, it would be oil, not coolant. I'm thinking its either the water pump, or more likely the thermostat housing.

There is a weep hole under the water pump. Right under the shaft the fan connects to. Reach under there and feel if that weep hole is wet.

This is a little off topic, but once you fix the coolant leak, you should really address that rusty oil pan. If it rusts through, you have to pull the engine to replace it. The good news is, it doesn't look bad, and can be sanded and painted in place

So there does look to be a little residue (discoloration) on the front cover above and to the right

And a little discoloration below the water pump pulley, but it's tough to see real well

What you describe indicates a failing seal / bearing on the water pump. Failing water pump usually shows up as a wet weep hole (location described above) first. This usually happens after the WP bearing is worn out. My guess is that it is time to replace the pump.

Another suggestion ... put a coolant filter on the system. When I did that, my water pump lasted much longer (4 months vs. 2 years so far). I clogged my first filter (grit and rust) in just a few weeks, the second in 2 months, and the third is still going strong. Old Coolant went from mud looking to dull green, then I changed the coolant. Coolant is bright green now.

ok, well, couldn't quite find the weep hole with my hand but then my hand didn't fit very well. I don't think it is the housing leaking though didn't feel any leakage coming from around it. I priced out all the parts for a new pump, housing, ELC and came to about $400 total for parts for swap to one of the international pumps with the filter on them. Anyone here tried the international pump conversion?

I put my own DIY on my truck, but you can buy a kit from SP Diesel (look in filtration section).

It's cheaper and easier than an international pump setup.

I did the T444e for about $240. Bought the pump from Bus Parts Experts (Florida), who happen to be having a 10% off sale right now...try using coupon code BPE0430 if you buy the pump from them. It really was easy to do. No more difficult than a regular pump swap. I did a write up on it under Trey's thread with photos and part numbers, etc. PM me if you decide to do it and have questions. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ater-pump.html

Post #61 has a picture of the stock pump and weephole.

Just be sure you have single alternators. The dual setup runs the belt through the filter iirc.

thanks for all the help. Hopefully have enough saved up to buy all the parts to do the pump swap soon. Does the T444e pump use the stock pulley and fan?

Well, got the pump installed and almost everything hooked up. Still need coolant, -205 viton o-ring for filter valve, and a new thermostat housing. Hope I did everything right. Is there a difference between the Riffraff housing and the Diesel sight housing? I'll take some picks and post them up soon. Thanks again for all the help from those who have experience doing this before.

Not 100% here, but I think riffraff is the stock housing. The diesel site housing is a billet housing that is thicker and is supposed to seal better. I never had issues with stock housings sealing up, and haven't had the reason to update.
