what can be causing my 6.0 to be gutless when cold and as it warms up it runs better. when at operating temp it runs 100%. I just changed to 5/40 synth oil hoping it might help but no change.....no check engine light either. truck is stock except for straight pipe exhaust. truck has 213000kms
Very good chance you have an FICM problem. If you have the ability to troubleshoot and have a SGII (scangaugeII) gauge you can figure out if the VOLTS are correct. If you have an issue I recommend you contact Ed @ FICMrepair.com

Or you can manually read voltage on FICM with a volt meter/multimeter. Instructions are in the tech folder.
Just did this myself for similar symptoms and found low voltage on the FICM. New power supply coming from BPD this week. Also this week I'll be getting my AutoEnginuity package so I can follow up to check injector health. There went a grand...but no hassling with dropping the truck off somewhere. If you too find low FICM voltage, you can save a few bucks sending the FICM in for repair like joe blow's reference. I went replacement route for less downtime. Can't afford 2 weeks down for shipping (and 2-way fast shipping would add up to the extra I'm spending...)
You shouldn't be pushing the pedal that much when cold. The 6.0 needs to be at operating temps before you floor it.
ACTUALLY I TAKE IT very easy with the truck until it is warmed up. I can just tell when when its cold and doing slow driving it is very sluggish. it also has a deffinate cylinder misfire when cold and warmn. when at hot normal temp it is good. but the way I look at it what can you expect from a truck I paid 3000 for., if it needs injectors ill put them in.
Mine too seems sluggish when I first start. I just let it warm up if its cold. I know my ficm is good according to scanguage. No codes or anything. I figured just the nature of the beast!
X2 on the Injectors also could be bad gloplug ,I would let eot and coolent warm up to around 80 that will also warm the tranny fluid so every thing is nice and toasty before you get on down the road,If you are exsperenceing surge or stalling low boost ,clean EGR valve or EBP senser

^x2. Diesel engines rely on heat for combustion so I think they are just naturally low on power when cold. The HEUI injection system doesn't help either. But if you are having a misfire, then you should definitely check out the FICM and injectors as others have said.
fwiw - Having done the injectors due to being bad so that it would not pull itself when cold. (Plus other preventive items) My race tune I run for mileage is very sensitive and almost difficult to drive mildly when cold. This has to do with HPOP oil pressure until the oil warms up. (touchy throttle) My other tunes are far easier when cold. Point being you would not think my 6.0 is low on power when cold. :-)
The 2cycle oil make a huge difference on my bad injectors...
Adding to the fuel to address the dry ultra low sulfer fuel we have. Google "Lubricity Additive Study Results" and you will find a lot of discussion both for and against. In short ULSD fuel does not meet spec for 6.0 injectors. There are advantages to oil additives as well due to the "stress/shearing" the injectors place on the oil.
