Another tach/cluster question.

I picked up an instrument/tach cluster from the local pick and pull.
I took it out of a 1997 F350 with a 460 v8.
I pretty sure that the 97 F350's were OBD I.

Will this cluster work in my 1995 F150, 300 six, 5 speed, OBD I, without any wire or pin mods?

If not, does anyone have a wiring schematic that will explain the wires that need to be switched?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Randy

I don't have the diagrams, but I know several members here do to point ou the differences. Big question here though. Is the one you pulled for a gas engine or a diesel engine?

The 97 f350 I got the cluster from had a 460 gas motor with an automatic transmission.

Ok that's good. Wait till someone gets on here that has the diagrams. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I rephrased the question and title so as to make it a little more clear.

No, that cluster will not work properly in your truck without modification. (Sorry, I don't know what needs to be re-pinned.)

96-97 (F-250HD to F-350HD)
94-95
92-93

Those are the years that are compatible with each other. Also, 1996 saw the majority switch to OBDII. There were some OBDII in 1995, but they aren't common. They are about as common as a 1995 MAF 4.9 truck.

My '96 F350 is OBD1 with C6,460, built in Canada June 1996. 1996 trucks for California were all OBD2. 97's were all OBD2. Why was my truck OBD1? It has been a real PITA at times. It was because of over 8500lbs gross from what I was told, and the switch was in the middle of being made, etc.

F150's and Bronco's switched to OBD-II in 96'. F250HD's and F350's didnt go to OBD-II as far as I know until the Superduty came out in 99'. California might have been an exception.

Cali. emission trucks (F250/350) went OBD-II in 1996 depending on a few factors such as engine and GVW. I have heard Massachusetts trucks are the same.

Federal Emission '97s stayed OBD-I according to my Ford Service Manual.

Had a feeling you would set it strait. Thanks

Yaga,

First, thanks for replying.

Is your contention that the cluster is not compatible based on the assumption that the 95 is OBDI and the 97 is OBDII or are there other reasons?

As far as I'm able to determine, the donor truck 97 F350 is OBDI as is my 95 F150.

Any information that you might have that would clarify this would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Randy

Ford did wiring changes between 93 and 94, and changed again between 95 and 96.
It can be done, but you need good wiring diagrams for each year to figure out what to re-pin in the connectors...

I've redid the wiring pinout changes, and it's not bad, but still a PITA..

The biggest changes you're gonna be seeing is the Airbag light on the cluster is gonna actually be the Alternator/Battery Light.

There's a couple more changes I can't remember right off hand.

Thanks Phy,

My question, is did they just change the wiring on the OBDII trucks in 96 or did they also change the wiring on the 250 and 350 trucks that still remained OBDI.

The information I am getting is that the HD trucks were exempt from the changed government regs requiring OBDII until the 98 model year.

I'm hoping for someone who has done one of these changes to chime in with a yea or nay and wiring change information if it is needed.
