My vacuum brake booster has started making noise when decelerating, the noise is coming from the cab and will go away if I touch the pedal a little. Is this a sign to replace? Any good place to get replacement?
One more question about this issue, while the vacuum line is still connected to booster, when I pinch off the vacuum line the engine slows down as if there is a leak within the booster. Is this a normal effect or is there really a leak in the booster?
I'm confused. You said your booster is leaking, but the sound is coming from the cab. The booster is not in the cab. How do you know the booster is leaking? The pinched line issue? I agree with JWC; that indicates a leak in the booster.

I first noticed my booster leak by hearing it while in the cab . Mine was rusted through at the rear by the mount . I did hear it in the cab while stopped .

I don't know about anyone else. The booster in my truck has a plastic tube and a rubber boot into the cab. A leak in the booster would for sure transmit sound into the cab.
I was able to stop the truck while it started making the noise without pushing brake pedal, it would stop if pedal was pushed, the noise was louder at the booster it self. I changed it out yesterday.

Here's a dumb question, did you have to adjust the rod length in the new booster? I should get my new one delivered tomorrow...The brake booster was making my Front brakes drag!! I basically re-did the brakes, new lines, caliper, drums, shoes, springs...all I have left is the front rotors...I have to take apart the front hubs to do that so hopefully I don't mess it up..
I measured how much my old rod stuck out past where the master cylinder bolts to booster and the new was the same as old. The instruction that came with new did not mention making any adjustments to this rod. I also noticed on my bad booster that as vacuum increased the pedal would good down by itself.

I'll check it...I think mine did similar and the spring got weak which in turn didn't let the brake pedal release to the normal position. I couldn't get the adjuster bolt to move as it was rusted. I hate the burned/overheated brake smell...and I cant drive it till I get that fixed! Thanks for the info!

If you don't mind me asking wilcom47, how did you come to the conclusion that your booster was bad? I only ask because im having trouble with both calipers dragging on my 78. My brake pedal when compressed down will not come all the way back up, unless I turn the truck off. I took the vac. hose off the booster (which is connected to my new Edelbrock 1406. The truck did not want to run then, so i plugged the hose off, took care of the rough idle. Took it out the road for few miles and noticed the brakes where not dragging and they where not hot like before. But the pedal was very hard to push down and the truck took a longer distance to stop. So I guess I was wondering if the booster could be bad on my truck also??
