Dying pterodactyl noise
I have a 1983 F250 with a 6.9 diesel in it. Whenever I step on the brake pedal, I get a hissing noise and occasionally a low pitched honk that sounds a lot like the cry of a dying pterodactyl. I'm guessing that my brake booster has developed a leak. So I checked the vacuum supply hose from the pump to the booster for leaks. All appears to be well. I'm betting the booster itself has had it. Any comments, opinions? Any ideas what a new booster will run me? I plan on installing it myself. Can I get away with a junkyard booster or am I just buying more trouble?
Thanks for your time and consideration! I learn a lot in this forum.
I wouldn't bother with a junkyard booster. You can exchange it for a rebuilt one like 68Torino said. Should be in the $50-125 range. The one for my 3/4-ton Chevy was $75 at Autozone.
