Swapped a newer block into my truck this winter, and threw a rebuilt IP and injectors into it. Having power issues with the old girl now. Truck seems very lame between 1500-2000rpm, have turned fuel up on her to try n help, but hasn't really worked. Also have to have pump twisted as far advanced as I can to get it to run right, anything less and she won't run worth a darn and pours blue smoke. Ideas? Has a new fuel filter on it as well, so fuel starvation shouldn't be an issue.
Could be a weak mechanical fuel pump causing that.
Timing to far advance is really bad for the engine, and will eat your glow plug tips alive! Literally....
With the engine running, press in that tire valve on the fuel filter housing, I think it should shoot out 3 pints of fuel a minute or something, someone with a sure answer will chime in. If your fuel pressure is to low, then that will explain your loss of power even with new pump and injectors.
Just incase you don't know where the pump is, heres a pic. Just under, behind the vacuum pump, below the Alternator.
do a compression test. if its poring out blue smoke then oil is coming from somewhere hopefully no the rings being shot. assuming that you're previous motor didnt smike blue and oyu just swaped the heads over id say the new block has something to do with it. but im sure its more simple than that. good luck
Ya its a new lift pump, and I have good fuel psi. I purchased the entire truck that this motor is from, and I drove it extensively on the test drive. I believe the motor to be solid. The smoke only occurs when the timing is backed off, so I don't think it is oil or it should occur no matter the timing. I'm not certain if there could be something inside the pump that is causing smoke? Dirt from install? Have turned the screws to the pump now, and power is better than before. The timing just baffles me still.
