I've been trying to figure out the towing rating for my truck. It's a 1988 F-350, standard cab, long bed. It has a GVWR of 10,000 pounds, but I can't find a GCWR number on the door jam or title. Does anyone know what it is?
You can't calculate GCWR from anything on the door it's something that is set by the manufacturer based on the powertrain combo and is found in the owners manual. My '90 owners manual says a 460/C6/4.10 has a GCWR of 18.5K for a max trailer weight of 12.5k depending upon the travelling weight of the truck, and for 4.63 gear that goes to 22k and 16k. There is no entry for 4.56 gears and the above numbers assume stock tire sizes, 33's and 4.56 equates to a 4.33 with stock rubber so your actual towing capacity falls somewhere between 12.5k and 16k or about 14k.

Yeah, mine was originally geared at 4.10. Even with 33's the 4.56 gearing gives it a bit more power off the line, and they help with tire smokin', lol. With the current setup I hardly feel 8k behind me. It doesn't move the truck around, 0-60 is just under 10 seconds, and stopping is easy (using trailer brakes, so it should be...). So I'd be comfortable towing much more with it. I already figured that a good max weight between truck/trailer was probably around 20k, so I was about right on with what you're saying. Glad for the confirmation. With me, two full tanks of gas, and my tools, my truck comes to about 5800 pounds (good ole landfill scale).

I'm glad that you brought up 4.63 gears. A PO did the gear swap and I've never actually known if the gears were 4.56 or 4.63. There's such a small difference that it's hard to tell... At 60 MPH with my current tires it would only be about a 40-50 RPM difference, so I've never figured it out. I'll have to find that out.
