"so I have gotten a 5.8L 97 f-2 (not my first choice but hey I'll take it given the circumstances) now from what I understand the motor is heavily corked in the exhaust manifold and in the heads. now I am going to replace the cam and I have one in mind (a crane 444232) but im open to suggestions. im wondering how I should go about increasing the performance in a cost effective manner, because I don't plan on having this truck for more than a couple years (hopefully moving up to a 7.3). I'm trying to set this truck up to play in the sand, so again any suggestions would be greatly appreciated."
What size tires and what gearing does it have or will have?
I have already suggested 1.7 rockers and longtube headers in the other 6 or 8 threads you have going on this subject, IMO it's not worth changing the cam in this vintage motor given the stock EFI system, add the above parts to uncork it and then gear appropriately for whatever size tires you want to use.
heh.. sorry, i put out a few posts to make sure i got a response..any way so I'll drop the crane although i was finding out there is a cork in the cam and thought it was the cam ..i can't seem to find any long tubes for this 351W (at least i think its a Windsor, (truth be told my dad bought it and I haven't gone and picked the truck up yet to run all the codes all I have is the vin to work with) right now im looking at using some shorties from sumit # sumg9036 and then maybe making longs out of them with either a bolt on or welding if you could point in the direction of some long tubes that won't require a mini starter that would be awesome..and ill look into the rockers
Yes it's a Windsor the M series ended production around 1980 and the Cleveland never made it out of the 60's.
There are lots of headers available for these trucks but you will have to ditch the Thermactor(air injection) system as none of these have provisions to connect the air tube located behind the motor on HD trucks, but in most cases that's exactly what people want to do anyway. This system is only required to help heat up the stock cat converter on cold starts so if that is to be deleted or exchanged for an aftermarket version then this system serves no purpose. Longtube headers designed for these trucks clear the starter no problem, the only complaint with them usually is that the cheap versions hang too low.

hmm well I'm spending about two hundred which isn't super cheap I did find some for 170 I'll post the part number and you tell me what yah think
Where are you located? The paint on those things won't make it past the first time the motor is fired so they begin rusting right away, if you live in the salt belt or near the ocean you may only get 2-3 years out of them.
From all reports the best fitting brand seems to be Pacesetter, Headmean is a bit less common though I can't remember anybody complaining about them, while Flowtech and Hooker are both Holley brands now and are the worst of the group, I have Flowtechs on my truck now but I'll never buy them again.
im in the salty sand ...i live on the Texas gulf coast..but to be fair i washed my old 78 jimmy (a rust bucket till the day it died.. gonna miss the sound that 650cfm edle on a 350 was makin on those cherry bombs) every time i left the sand or if i hadn't gone that week id wash it at the end of the week ..soap and the works and i made sure i sprayed down the underside of the motor the manifolds and the exhaust/frame. i don't think ill wrap the pipes cause i don't want salt getting up inside the wrap (it helps if you don't drive in the water around here immensely lol i see so many people mudding in saltwater )
hey, conanski do you think these would be a good fit? im mostly worried about low hanging cause id hate to spend this money the watch it get cracked when i got through the sand and have to go over a washed up log
