I am gonna build a box but I need some opinions on dimensions...I have one solobaric 12 with a Kenwood 800 watt amp. I want to build a ported box. I have a supercab with no back seat so i wouldn't mind it being kinda bulky! Thanx

hey dont build your own box! go to www.kicker.com and by a box specifically made for the solo. they make sealed and ported. home made boxes have way of blowing up, cracking, or they just break apart. so buy a professional built box
The only reason that a homemade box would fail would be to poor choice of materials or poor assembly. If you are fairly good with some basic tools and construction techniques you shouldn't have a problem builing a good box. A lot of the prefab boxes I have seen dont look very well built at all.
If you are able to build a box the way you want, why would you pay the inflated prices they are asking for a prefab? There is also the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you built it yourself.
I feel Kicker is the ecception tho. Those solo baric boxes are made tuff and have a nice vinyl covering. Crutchfield throws the box in for free But I think they only do it with the single voice coil version. If it's a free box why not grab it? You could always duplicate the dimenssions.
I have used solobarics in the past and now have solobaric L12's. With a amp that powerful, why not go with a sealed box. The bass will be deeper and your box will be smaller. Typically the Solobarics require 1 to 1 1/2 cubic feet per speaker (Sealed).
The ported box is typically better for those not wanting to invest in a big amp. Ported boxes generally take up more space as well.
There are several opinions on this matter, this is mine.
Kicker's prefab ported boxes are tuned at close to 40 hz, which is unacceptable to me...if you want anything close to sound quality. With a tune that high, you'll get a nasty peak in the high 40's/low 50's, where a lot of music's bass resides. Go over to CAF and email/pm Polecat. He's a kicker employee, and can advise you the ideal size, taking in consideration the driver, available power, and you desired results. Tempe's box looks good, but I would like to see a slightly lower tune, say 30 hz.
BTW, does the Kenwood say "800 watts" on the amp? I'm thinking it's more like 400 wrms. Kenwood is known for stamping max power, in big letters/numbers, on the top of their amps.
