Well got a electronic fuel pump for the truck but now I have a question about wiring it. I know someone had told me that originally these trucks came with a mechanical pump, so I am guessing that the proper wiring wouldn't be an option. So I was wondering if I could just buy two 10 gauge wires and wire the positive to the stater solenoid and the negative to the chassis? If it sounds like I don't know what I'm trying to do it's cause I don't. Lol
You need the pump to come on with the keyswitch, and turn off with the keyswitch.
You can add a relay if you like, especially if the pump draws a lot of current. If you add a relay, then yes one of the relay terminals can be connected to the starter solenoid(the big one that goes to the battery +). The pump can then be connected to one of the other terminals on the relay. Since the relay is not energized, then the pump will not run all the time, even though the relay is connected to the battery +.
The relay has a couple of other terminals. These control the relay. One of them will be grounded. The other one will be run into the cab, and you can hook it to a spot in the fuse box and has power with the key in run.
P.S. Always use a fuse or circuit breaker on your new wiring. In this case it would be inserted in the wire that goes between the solenoid connection and the relay.
