AirDog2 DIY Harness

After another melted fuse I'm taking the advice of some threads and upgrading the wiring.

Some questions I have concerning the ground wires are:

Does the relay need a ground wire?

Is the relay ground for the relay switch or the AD pump?

Do I just wire the relay ground to the battery and ground the pump separately to the frame?

Also, does it matter how far from the power source the relay and fuse are? I would prefer to mount them under the vehicle away from the heat of the engine, unless that heat is negligible in a properly wired setup.

I didn't use the AD wiring harness, but I did ground the pump directly to the frame. I also ran a much larger positive wire as close to the factory pump wiring connector as I could. I used a separate relay that takes its power directly from the battery and is triggered from the factory fuel pump wires so that the pump would time out after ~30 seconds just like the factory pump.

That sounds right, but did you run a ground wire from the relay or is that not needed if the pump is grounded direct to the frame, so basically you have just 3 wires from the relay, one to the factory pump wire for turn-on, one to the battery and one to the pump?

And did you wire the relay and fuse closer to the battery or closer to the pump?

The fuse is in the stock holder. The relay is under the hood close to the factory fuel pump wires on the drivers side fender well. The relay requires 2 circuits or 4 wires however you choose to look at it. One wire goes from the battery to the relay and then from the relay to the fuel pump. That's on one circuit of the relay. Then you have one wire from the factory fuel pump hot to the relay then back to the factory fuel pump ground. That's the other circuit of the relay. I don't have a picture of a relay that I can post but basically the wires from the factory fuel pump close the relay coil when you turn the key on. That energizes the circuit that goes to the fuel pump.
