So I recently replaced my brakes and rotors with parts from frozen rotors. Today, I noticed a smell coming from my truck right before I got it home. I also noticed before the smell, it was pulling to the left. And when I braked, also pulling to the Left. I think I may have a brake dragging. I have heard about the caliper slide pins freezing, but when I replaced my brakes and rotors, none of them were frozen and appeared to be in good shape. I have the truck jacked up now with the wheel removed and didn't find anything apparent. I just took the caliper off and had my buddy press on the brake slowly while I watched the pistons. Only the piston closest to the fluid inlet came out. The other one did not move. Does this indicate any type of malfunction?

Yup! The pistons can freeze, and that one that won't extend is likely not retracting into its bore properly which is causing your dragging brake. Looks like you need a new caliper.
Ok. Thanks. I figured something wasnt right there. Just did a price check here in town and oriellys had the beat price at $56 with a lifetime warranty. I usually like to go with fomoco when i can, but i need it now and it comes with a lifetime warranty.
I just replaced my driver's side front caliper because the lower piston was froze. I picked one up from RockAuto for about $36 plus shipping with a lifetime warranty. I needed some other stuff so the shipping was no big deal for me.
If you in that far and the truck has some age on it may as
well do the hoses. Old hoses can ballon and cause dragging also.
But with the stuck piston this does not seem to be the problem.
I just did all four corners (rotors & pads) this weekend and had a stuck caliper after the test drive, felt heat witnessed some smoking. I should've known it as that one was incredibly hard to compress with the C-clamp. Simple, although expensive (did not have time to shop around), fix and off I go. I miss the SRW days as now my rear brake rotor changes are quite involved (removing rear axle shafts, rear hubs, packing bearings, etc....) with the dually. Not hard, just time consuming.
Just a comment. On any caliper with two or more pistons it's really common for only one piston to move when the pedal is pressed with the caliper off the disc. The piston with the least resistance takes all the movement. Just put a c-clamp on the piston that moves to get the other one to move - or not, if it's stuck.
