I read mixed reviews of this. Some say you have to scratch off the film, some say with blue LEDs you don't have to. Just wondering so I can do it right all at once. Can I do this with the ac controls too and what LEDs do I need and how many? I have the xlt cluster with a tach.
All you have to do is pull the cluster, disconnect the wire harness in the back, and twist the bulbs out n put LED in. I have all Blue LED's in the dash and climate controls. Afternoon job, fairly simple, Dont disconnect the Connector for the needle that tells you what gear your in if you have an automatic, huge hassle to reconnect. Have to pull the light switch on the dash and fuel tank selector (if you have dual tanks)
Also, bulbs are all 194. and if the bulbs dont work, take them out and flip the contacts, LED's are polar, the bulbs in the dash are non-polar. LED's work in only one direction as the standard bulbs work either direction.
If you want blue, buy blue bulbs. Most other colors will require the green film to be removed. It isn't too bad to remove, but it a fair bit of work and you do have to be careful. I did it to have white gauges and I LOVE it. I need new bulbs though, as the ones I bought were cheap and are loosing brightness as time goes on.
Sorry, but I have to disagree. You CAN get that green film tint off, that is correct. But it IS NOT necessary. Mine is running with the tint still on it, and looks absolutely amazing. But, from what you said, getting the tint off will give you a clearer color, mine is Blue LED's with the green tint film, and it comes off as a blue-purple color and really shows the color at night. I do alot of night driving, going to wyoming and michigan a few times a year right now.
Also, I forgot, you need i believe its 8 Bulbs to do both climate and cluster. 194 bulbs as well.

Disagree with what? Blue works fine for coming out a nice blue-green. I guess you can do green as well or even white LED's to get an even better green, but to get any other true color the film needs to come off, or you just end up with a green tint to any color you choose.
