Hopefully something simple.

1991 Ford Aerostar w/4.0 V6/AT/2wd

While driving at low speed (25-35 mph) engine backfired, began running really rough (vacuum hose blown off), continued to drive home (abbout 2 miles), parked in driveway and turned off engine, found and re-attached hose, tried to start engine, large plume of white electrical smoke from open hood, starter went from normal start speed to very slow speed as if battery was about dead, removed starter and tested out of hole, very high speed and tork (almost ripped my arm off), replaced starter since battery and starter were obviously okay, tried to start engine, same low battery condition, what do you think the problem is, what tests can I perform before I start delving into uncharted removal territory (newer vehicles have too many sensors, switches, computers and wires for this old brain), I long for the days when there was enough room in the engine compartment for me and three friends to climb inside and fix anything with a screwdriver and pair of pliers.

Check compression would be a start.

With the slow starter and obvious electrical smoke, the first place I would look would be those fusible links located just below the starter relay on the driver's side fenderwell. There are 3 or 4 links, short sections of what appears to be heavy gauge wire, coated with a plastic covering. Look for evidence of blistering on the plastic coating or burned looking sections along the link. If one or more of these are damaged, repair links are available.
