Been noticing a clunk coming from the rear of the Ex so I took a peek today and this is what I found. Bolts for the rear shock top mount broke and the bar pin is bent a little and its cracked at the end. Looks like it's made of stamped steel.
I searched this forum and googled it but I can't find the part number for this bar pin. So I called the Ford dealer and its not something they sell -- only the nuts and bolts. I also called all the local parts store and none of them carry it. Even called 4 Wheel parts and I was told they dont have it.
Has anybody sourced an aftermarket replacement bar pin that its more durable than the stock ones? Where and whats the part# ?
I recalled when I bought a Monroe rear shock, that bar is already on the new shock. I reused the old bolts. Are you able to use any bolt and clip/nut that fits?
Try looking at a new pair of shock absorbers for the Ex and you'll sde what I mean.
The cross bar is part of the shock. When I was given my new springs they also came with the original factory Rancho shocks from the F-250 donor truck, I used them for a year but had to make cross bars for the rears as the SD trucks mount like our fronts with bolts. I used some 5/8" steel tubing, fit snugly in the top bushing then flattened out each end in the bench vice and drilled the needed holes. After the year on my truck they looked just fine when they came off for the new shock installation.
Thats a great idea. How thick was the tubing wall?
I might give that a shot if I cant find these bar pins. Thanks.
Not sure of the wall thickness off the top of my head, it's structural steel tubing that I use to fab the bumpers and rub rails on my son's QuarterMidget racecars. pretty tough stuff, I'll check the thickness tonight when I get home.
Looking at your signature, I am envious of your Metro. I would love to find a decent 3 cyl 5 spd Metro that doesn't have a rusted out subframe.

When I bought my Metro I got lucky it only had surface rusts on the frame horns. I cleaned them really well with my wire wheel and coated them with POR15. I also tied the frame horns together with a brace it give it more rigidity.
I could not be any happier with the Metro, easy to fix, cheap parts and its saving me at least $250 in gas per month -- it paid for itself in 4 months.
I just cranked up the timing to 12* (5* factory) and I gained another 4 MPG - no ping and better throttle response. I should be really close to 50 MPG when it gets warmer out and with the summer blend .
1.0L 40 hp at the wheels. Yeah is laughable but its putting money in my pocket.<O</O
Man i grew up with those old Geo Metros. born and raised in Seattle, my father bought two brand new, before people really understood timing belt replacements we lost two engines on the first car and only one on the second. he was commuting over 1500 miles per week. but man they were pretty much bullet proof
Have you tired stopping by a shop and seeing if they have any laying around from replacement shocks? I used to save a bunch of that stuff when I could so i could use it later or help someone. Just a thought.
