I recently swapped a 460 into my 79 f150 xlt 4x4 which had factory ac and a 351m originally with the york compressor with an inertia ring on the clutch.
The donor pickup for the 460 was a 76 f250 2wd with factory ac. I used all the brackets and pulleys from the 76 460 except for power steering which is a modified saginaw van bracket. I did not keep the 76 460 york compressor which had a small clutch on it without the inertia ring. So I do not have a way of verifying exactly what I had or need by a part number.
The problem is this...
My ac clutch pulley does not line up, it sticks out to far. My clutch inertia ring also hits the tensioner pivot bolt for the 460 upper compressor bracket.
I ordered a clutch without the inertia ring for a 76 ford f250 with 460 and it still sticks out too far but does clear the tensioner bolt.
Does anybody have any experience with this issue? Can you tell me which clutch I need or even if I need a different compressor.
Here is a picture of what I have 351m compressor with inertia ring on the 460 with correct ac bracket. I know it doesn't show alignment or issues.
I ordered the clutch for a 76 460 from the parts store that appeared to be correct and it was not.
None of the parts folk around here can figure out what I need. It is really frustrating and none of the junkyards around here have any 460s with ac to look at.
The only part # I came up with was a Murry 48809. I am not sure why the one you had did not line up. That Murry # should be easy to find or cross to another number.
duallyhauler, did you use this part number or did you get it from searching by vehicle type at a parts store. The reason I ask is because I think I may have already tried that. I ordered a murray (unknown part #) from oreilly auto for the application my engine came from and it did not fit.
yTru ordering another one. Sometimes stuff is boxed wrong. I used the Oreilly computer. I know someone that work's there and looked at the pics to verify that it was the correct clutch. He told me that it could be boxed wrong. Or go to napa, rockauto, carquest, etc. Someone has the right one.
